Since the mid-2010s, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [DaIISh; Dawlat al-Islamiya fi-Iraq wal ash-Sham] has gained many supporters among Egypt’s jihadis. Many militants who were previously loyal to al-Qa’ida switched their allegiance to the DaIISh following the formation of the caliphate in the summer of 2014. This development was especially pronounced on the Sinai peninsula where the leading jihadi group, the Partisans of the Holy House [ABaM; Ansar Bait al-Maqdis], became an official branch of the DaIISh; the Islamic State’s Province of Sinai [DaIWS; Dawlat al-Islamiya Wilayat Sina’a]. Groups loyal to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s organization have since emerged in mainland Egypt as well. These entities operate independently of the DaIWS. Although these groups worked at the behest of the DaIISh, they were never recognized as a “province”. The Egyptian authorities have cracked down on DaIISh-loyalists in the country, forcing them to scale down their activities in recent years.
