Hichem el-Mounafki (°1978) was an Islamist militant from Tunisia’s Sidi Bouzid governorate. He was a senior operative of the Brigade of the Uqba Bin Nafa’a [KUIN; Katibat Uqba Ibn Nafaâ] with close ties to the group’s leaders.1 His exact role in the organization was never revealed. In September 2014, the Tunisian interior ministry made a public search announcement for him.2

Security forces actively hunted him down and Mounafki narrowly escaped a police raid on his hideout in Sidi Bouzid on Nov. 20, 2014.3 One of his companions was eliminated in the operation. Mounafki was eventually killed during a police siege on the house in which he was holed up on Dec. 31, 2014.4 In the following weeks, the authorities rolled up his network of associates. On Jan. 03, 2015, four of his subordinates were arrested in Sidi Bouzid.5 Seven other associates were apprehended in the city on Jan. 15.6
