Abdelbakr Bouzaiene was a shadowy Algerian militant who took up jihad in his home country at an unknown time. He fought with the Base Organization in the Islamic Maghreb [AQIM; Tanzim al-Qa’ida fi-Bilad al-Maghreb al-Islami] but no further information is available. His involvement in militancy made him a wanted man by the Algerian authorities.1 In 2014, Bouzaiene joined the Brigade of Uqba Bin Nafa’a [KUIN; Katibat Uqba Ibn Nafaâ] in Tunisia’s western highlands.2 He reportedly took part in several of the group’s most significant operations, including the July 2014 attack on a Tunisian military unit on Mount Chaâmbi in which fifteen soldiers were killed.3 Bouzaiene was appointed as the leader of the KUIN following the death of his predecessor Akrouf el-Bey in September 2019.4 Security forces eliminated Bouzaiene and four of his companions during an operation by security forces on Mount Chaâmbi on May 17, 2021.5 At the time of his death, he was thought to have been planning attacks against political figures and security installations.6
