  • Conflicts: Islamist Militancy in Tunisia

The Youths of Ariana [JdA; Jeunes d’Ariana] was a small militant entity that was based in the eponymous suburb of Tunis. It had about a dozen members who apparently wanted to reinforce Arab terrorists engaged in violence against Israel. In February 2003, Tunisian security forces rounded up nine members of the JdA. A court later sentenced them to prison for membership of a terrorist organization and the plotting of attacks.

The court case attracted the attention of international human rights activists who had become convinced that the men had been sent to prison for merely surfing the internet. Under pressure from the international diplomatic community and non-governmental organizations, the Tunisian authorities freed the incarcerated JdA members in February 2006. Later that year, one of the group’s cadres was arrested after he had joined the Algerian-based Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat [GSPC; Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat].
