Mohammed el-Gharbi (°ca 1990) is a little-known jihadi from Tunis. He apparently joined the Islamic State’s Sabratha Network as he was traveling through Libya on his way to join the jihadi forces in Syria.1

Gharbi was ordered to remain in Libya and started to raise funds through kidnapping for ransom. The proceeds of his activities were used to buy weapons and to facilitate the travel of Tunisian jihadis to Sabratha.2

Libyan militias captured Gharbi in February 2016 following an American air strike on the DaISN’s main compound.3 Prior to his arrest, he had been involved in the planning of the March 2016 attack on the Tunisian town of Ben Guerdane.4
