Hicham es-Saâdi is a little-known Tunisian Islamist from Ariana. In the early 2000s, he was associated with the Youths of Ariana [JdA; Jeunes d’Ariana]. This group was was made up of young Islamists who wanted to join Arab terrorist organizations engaged in violence against Israel. Saâdi was apprehended on Feb. 05, 2003 as the authorities cracked down on the outfit. In June 2004, a court sentenced him to prison. In February 2006, Saâdi and his JdA associates were freed by the Tunisian government.

Following his release, Saâdi reportedly joined the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat [GSPC; Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat]. In October 2006, Tunisian authorities charged him with having attempted to join jihadi forces operating in Iraq.
