Osama Chanou (º1996) is a Moroccan Islamist activist and longtime resident of Den Haag’s Schilderswijk neighborhood.1 As a teenager, he became involved in the Schilderswijk Jihadi Network [SJN] during the early 2010s. Before long, Chanou served as the network’s most important ideologue.2 He brazenly preached jihad to local Muslims on the streets and in the mosques of the neighborhood.3 Chanou also glorified jihad on social media and published tracts in support of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [DaIISh; Dawlat al-Islamiya fi-Iraq wal ash-Sham].4 He inspired a significant number of Dutch Muslims to go to Syria.5

At the same time, Chanou was also a key figure in the Street Da’awah Movement, the activist front of the SJN.6 In September 2013, he gained some notoriety by defiantly giving a lecture to his supporters as police tried to break up a gathering of Islamists at a sports field in the Schilderswijk neighborhood.7 Despite his religious fervor, Chanou’s earned a reputation for lusting after women. This caused some controversy within the local Islamist community.8

Dutch police arrested Chanou on Jun. 24, 2014.9 He spent more than a year in jail before being released in the runup to his trial in October 2015.10 On Dec. 10, 2015, a court sentenced him to three years in prison for his role in recruiting jihadis in the Netherlands.11 His current status is unknown.
