Spýros Mandýlas is an anarchist from the Greek city of Thessaloniki. He is seen as a leader in the “Nadir” community of left-wing extremist squatters.1 Mandýlas ran into trouble with the law for refusing military service in 2011.2 He has also been arrested on several occasions for theft. In the summer of 2012, Mandýlas was believed to have been one of the inciters behind violent brawls between rival bands of anarchists in Thessaloniki.3

Mandýlas is thought to have acted as a liaison between imprisoned members of the Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire [SPF; Synomosía ton Pyrínon tis Fotiás] and their supporters in 2012 and 2013.4 He is believed to have helped instigate attacks by allies of the SPF against people involved with the arrest and imprisonment of several members of the outfit. On Jul. 11, 2013, he was arrested in connection with a parcel bomb sent to the former chief of the police counter-terrorism unit.5 In March 2015, Mandýlas went on a hunger strike to protest his bail conditions. He only stopped after his demands were partially met after 54 days and was freed shortly afterwards.6 A week after his release, Mandýlas was assaulted and injured by rival anarchists at his squat. In the summer of 2016, prosecutors dropped charges against him in the trial against militants involved with the campaign against the SPF’s enemies.7
