Saïd Ighli (°1986) is a jihadi of North African descent from the Alsatian town of Wissembourg. As a young man, he played for the city’s soccer squad and later became a police assistant in Hagenau.1 In 2010, Ighli began serving as a guard at a courthouse holding facility.2 He was fired for theft in 2014.3 Ighli turned to Islamism soon afterwards and went on to become associated with the Strasbourg-Meinau Jihadi Network [FJSM; Filière Jihadiste de Strasbourg-Meinau].4

In May 2016, Ighli and two FJSM associates decided to link up with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [DaIISh; Dawlat al-Islamiya fi-Iraq wal ash-Sham] but were turned back by Slovenian border guards.5 On Jan. 17, 2017, police arrested him in the Schitigheim suburb of Strasbourg.6 In June 2018, Ighli was sentenced to five years in prison for his attempt to join a terrorist organization.7
