The fireworks specialist became a Muslim in the early 2000s after his son Kévin had converted to Islam and grew close to the Artigat and Toulouse Network [FAT; Filière d’Artigat et Toulouse] of Olivier Corel and Michel Clain.1 Gonot adopted Corel’s radical interpretation of Islam. Together with his wife, he followed his son to Syria in the mid-2010s.2 Gonot went on to fight in the ranks of the DaIISh forces. He was killed in clashes with Kurdish forces during their offensive against Raqqa in 2017.3 His wife and several grandchildren were apprehended by Turkish security forces after they had crossed into the country from Syria in July 2019.4 They were later extradited to France.
