Saïd Asboul is a mysterious Islamist militant based in the northern French city of Roubaix. He apparently became devoted to jihad in the early 2010s. His affiliation and the nature of his activities remain unknown. Asboul reportedly made a failed bid to join jihadi forces in Afghanistan in 2011.1 Two years later, he was intercepted in Turkey while on his way to join Islamist forces active in Syria.2

Asboul was affiliated with the Roubaix Jihadi Network [FJR; Filière Jihadiste de Roubaix]. He recruited several young Muslims and helped them reach Syria.3 Asboul is also known to have provided financial support the network’s recruits after they got to the country.4

Police arrested Asboul on Jun. 26, 2015 as they rolled up the FJR in a series of raids in Lille and Roubaix.5 He was brought to trial in late 2018 but refused to attend court proceedings.6 Asboul was sentenced to seven years in prison by a court in Paris on Nov. 09, 2018.7
