Militant Incidents in Egypt (Jan. – Mar. 2018)

1. Jan. 01 – A gunman shot and killed two Coptic Christians operating a liquor store in the Omraniya suburb of Giza. [Ahr, DNE & EI]
2. Jan. 01 – Two youths were abducted by militants in the Sheikh Zuweid area of the North Sinai governorate. Both captives were shot dead on Jan. 10. [Wat]
3. Jan. 03 – A police officer was killed when a roadside bomb exploded during an attempt to defuse it in the town of Bir el-Abd, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
4. Jan. 03 – Terrorists abducted a civilian from his home in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. The hostage was found shot to death ten days later. [Wat]
5. Jan. 04 – A civilian was killed and another one was injured when gunmen raked their car with gunfire west of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
6. Jan. 04 – Two policemen were shot dead by terrorists after they had stopped their car east of Bir el-Abd, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
7. Jan. 06 – Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a young man outside his home in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
8. Jan. 06 – An officer was shot dead by a sniper as he was guarding a police station in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]

10. Jan. 09 – Motorcycle-borne gunmen fired at the convoy of a senior police official in the Dakahliya governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [DNE]

12. Jan. 11 – A civilian was wounded when unknown gunmen shot him in the town of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [MY]
13. Jan. 13 – Unidentified militants shot and killed a civilian at a market in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [MY, Wat & Y7]
14. Jan. 17 – A roadside bomb exploded as a police patrol passed by in the Sebeka area of the North Sinai governorate, killing one officer and injuring four colleagues. [EI, MS & Wat]
15. Jan. 17 – Two officers were injured when a roadside bomb exploded as a bus carrying policemen passed by near the town of Bir el-Abd, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
16. Jan. 17 – Muslim thugs hurled firebombs at a church and the homes of several Christian families during a rampage against the Coptic community in Kafr el-Dawar, in the Beheira governorate. Five Copts sustained injuries in assaults during the violence. The incident took place after an altercation between a Christian and his Muslim employer. [Esh]
17. Jan. 18 – Militants abducted a fisherman outside his home in the village of Sukadra, in the North Sinai governorate. The hostage was found shot to death several days later. [Wat]
18. Jan. 20 – Four policemen were injured when their armored vehicle was struck in a roadside bomb blast in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
19. Jan. 20 – Motorcycle-borne militants shot and killed a civilian on a street in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [MY & Wat]
20. Jan. 21 – Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, injuring one officer. [Wat]
21. Jan. 23 – A group of militants opened fire at a police checkpoint in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, sparking a shootout. No one was hurt in the incident. [Wat]
22. Jan. 23 – Four policemen sustained injuries when their vehicle was struck in a roadside bomb explosion in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Y7]
23. Jan. 25 – A civilian was wounded when a bomb exploded on a street in the Masayid suburb of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
24. Jan. 26 – A young couple was injured when gunmen shot them on a square in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
25. Feb. 01 – Militants opened fire at a security checkpoint in southern Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, killing one police officer and injuring a colleague. [MY & Wat]
26. Feb. 03 – Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint on the southern outskirts of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. Three policemen sustained injuries in the incident. [MY & Wat]
27. Feb. 03 – Three policemen were injured in clashes with militants during an operation by security forces in Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
28. Feb. 04 – A roadside bomb exploded as a bus carrying police personnel passed by south of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, killing two officers. Five other policemen and a civilian were wounded in the blast. [MS, MY & Wat]
29. Feb. 07 – A policeman was injured when a group of gunmen attacked a security checkpoint on the outskirts of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
30. Feb. 08 – Approximately twenty militants attacked a security checkpoint west of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate, sparking a gun battle. No casualties were reported in the incident. [Wat]
31. Feb. 08 – A civilian was shot to death by unidentified militants in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
32. Feb. 19 – Three soldiers were killed and two colleagues were injured in clashes between bands of militants and security forces conducting operations in the North Sinai governorate. Four terrorists were eliminated in the fighting. [Ahr & MY]
33. Feb. 22 – Four suicide terrorists attacked an army post and a nearby military checkpoint in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. The assailants were shot dead by soldiers before they could blow themselves up. [Ahr, EI, DNE & MY]
34. Feb. 23-26 – Four soldiers were killed and seven colleagues were wounded in gun battles with militants during a series of operations in the North Sinai governorate. Eleven terrorists were eliminated during the clashes. [Ahr, AP, DNE & MY]
35. Mar. 01 – Two soldiers were killed and two colleagues were wounded in clashes with militants during military operations in the North Sinai governorate. Thirteen terrorists were killed in the encounters. [Ahr & AP]
