Militant Incidents in Egypt (December 2017)

1. Dec. 04 – Cadres of the DaIWS beheaded a member of the Tarabin Bedouin tribe after having abducted him weeks earlier in the North Sinai governorate. [EI & SN]
2. Dec. 05 – Unidentified militants shot and killed a young man in the city of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN & Wat]
3. Dec. 07 – A civilian was shot to death by terrorists on a street south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN & Wat]
4. Dec. 07 – Gunmen snatched a civilian from the Gaza Strip from his vehicle south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN & Wat]
5. Dec. 08 – A civilian was shot to death by unidentified assailants south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN]
6. Dec. 10 – Terrorists abducted and later shot dead a civilian near Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
7. Dec. 10 – An officer was shot and injured by a sniper outside a police station in Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN & Wat]

10. Dec. 13 – A roadside bomb exploded as two military bulldozers passed by in Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. One terrorist was killed in an ensuing gun battle. [Wat]
11. Dec. 13 – A civilian was shot to death by unknown attackers on a street in southern Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
12. Dec. 14 – Bands of gunmen clashed with Egyptian troops during firefights in the town of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN]
13. Dec. 15 – A soldier was wounded in a gun battle with bands of terrorists during operations by the army south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN]
14. Dec. 15 – The house of a fallen soldier was blown up by terrorists in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [MY & SN]
15. Dec. 15 – Two civilians were wounded when a band of militants attacked positions of the security forces west of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [SN]
16. Dec. 17 – Gunmen fired at an army unit in the city of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate, injuring a soldier. Two of the attackers were eliminated in retaliatory gunfire. [Wat]
17. Dec. 17 – Militants opened fire at a bus carrying school teachers in Raysa, in the North Sinai governorate. Two teachers were wounded in the attack. [MY, SN, Wat & Y7]
18. Dec. 17 – A roadside bomb exploded as a police armored vehicle passed by on the outskirts of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, injuring one officer. [Wat]
19. Dec. 17 – Terrorists abducted and subsequently shot dead four members of the Sawarka Bedouin tribe west of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
20. Dec. 18 – Four civilians were wounded when their house was struck by a mortar round fired by unknown militants in southern Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
21. Dec. 19 – Militants fired a rocket into a military airport near Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. A soldier was killed and two colleagues were injured in the incident. The attack occurred during a secret visit by the defense and interior ministers. The DaIWS claimed responsibility for the incident. [Ahr, Bal, EI, MS & Reut]
22. Dec. 21 – Hundreds of angry Muslims stormed a Coptic Christian church in the village of Kafr el-Waselin, in the Giza governorate, assaulting worshippers and vandalizing the compound. Three Christians, including a security guard, were injured in the incident. [Ahr, AP, DNE, EI, MY & Reut]
23. Dec. 24 – A policeman was killed when a bomb exploded during an attempt to defuse it on the side of a highway west of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
24. Dec. 27 – A group of gunmen attacked a police checkpoint on the outskirts of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, sparking a shootout in which one officer was injured. [Wat]
25. Dec. 28 – A roadside bomb exploded as an army convoy near the town of Bir el-Abd, in the North Sinai governorate. Six soldiers were killed and three colleagues were wounded in the attack. [AP, EI, MY, Reut, Wat & Y7]
26. Dec. 28 – Militants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a police armored vehicle in the city center of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, killing one officer and injuring three colleagues. A civilian was killed after getting caught in the crossfire of a subsequent gun battle between the attackers and security forces. Three terrorists were eliminated in the encounter. [AP, EI, MS & Wat]
27. Dec. 28 – One soldier was killed and two colleagues were injured when militants fired mortar rounds into a military base in the Gafgafa area of the North Sinai governorate. [AP & MS]
28. Dec. 29 – A gunman fired into a church in the Helwan suburb of Qahira, killing a policeman, seven Christians and a bystander. Five security guards were injured in the shooting. One of the assailants was shot dead in retaliatory gunfire by security forces. The DaIM asserted responsibility for the attack. [Ahr, AP, DNE, EI & Reut]
29. Dec. 29 – Two gunmen shot and killed two Copts working at a liquor store in the Omraniya neighborhood of Giza. [AP, EI & Reut]
30. Dec. 31 – A roadside bomb exploded as a military convoy passed by in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. No one was hurt in the blast. [Y7]
31. Dec. 31 – A soldier was wounded in gun battles with terrorists during operations west of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
