Militant Incidents in Egypt (May 2017)

1. May 01 – Suspected DaIWS militants shot and killed a woman during a raid on a house in the village of Yamit, in the North Sinai governorate. The victim’s husband and two sons were abducted and subsequently beheaded by the terrorists. [AP, Bal, DNE & EI]
2. May 01 – A roadside bomb exploded as a police armored vehicle passed by in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. Nobody was hurt in the blast. [Wat]
3. May 02 – Three workers sustained injuries when a vehicle of a water utility company was struck in a roadside bomb explosion west of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [MS]
4. May 02 – Gunmen opened fire at a police patrol in the Nassr City suburb of Qahira, killing three officers and wounding five colleagues. The HaH claimed responsibility for the attack. [Ahr, AP, Baw, MS & Reut]
5. May 02 – A police officer was shot and injured by militants at a security checkpoint in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [MS]
6. May 03 – Two tribesmen were injured in gun battles between DaIWS militants and members of a Tarabin Bedouin tribal defense militia in Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. Eight of the terrorists were eliminated in the fighting. [DNE]
7. May 07 – Militants shot and killed a Christian man at a barber shop in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. The DaIWS claimed responsibility for the attack. [AP, Bal, Baw & MS]
8. May 08 – Gunmen fired at police forces who raided their hideout in the Sohag governorate. Eight militants were eliminated in the ensuing shootout. [AP, Bal & EI]
9. May 10 – Terrorists opened fire at a roadblock manned by members of a Tarabin Bedouin tribal defense militia south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. Thirteen tribesmen were killed in the attack. The incident was claimed by the DaIWS. [AP, Bal, EI, MS & SHR]
10. May 14 – A roadside bomb exploded as a military armored vehicle passed by in the town of Hassana, in the North Sinai governorate, killing a colonel and injuring three soldiers. [Bal, DNE & Reut]
11. May 14 – Two soldiers were killed and five colleagues were wounded when militants attacked security forces in Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. [Bal]
12. May 20 – Gunmen belonging to the DaIWS murdered a trader west of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. No further information was available. [SHR]
13. May 21 – A group of militants abducted a civilian from a café in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. No further details were provided. [SHR]
14. May 21 – A young man was shot to death by unidentified assailants outside his home south of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Wat]
15. May 23 – Three civilians were abducted by cadres of the DaIWS from their homes in Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. The hostages were subsequently shot to death. [SHR]
16. May 25 – Gunmen shot and killed a police officer as they intercepted his taxi in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr, Bal, Baw & MENA]
17. May 26 – A band of gunmen sprayed gunfire at a bus carrying members of the Coptic Christian community as it was traveling to a monastery near the town of Adwa, in the Minya governorate. 18. May 29 – Militants bombed a vehicle belonging to the municipality in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. No further information was available. [SHR]
