Militant Incidents in Egypt (May 2015)

1. May 01 – A bomb exploded outside the headquarters of a mobile phone company in the city center of Zagazig, in the Sharqiya governorate, causing only damage. [EI]
2. May 02 – A small bomb went off outside a post office in the town of Qantara, in the Ismailiya governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [MY]
3. May 02 – Unidentified thugs set fire to an electricity pylon near Kafr Shukr, in the Qalyubiya governorate. Nobody was hurt in the attack. [MY]
4. May 03 – A roadside bomb exploded as a military armored vehicle passed by in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, killing a soldier and injuring three colleagues. [AM, DNE & EI]
5. May 03 – An electricity pylon was bombed and destroyed by a group of militants near Demu, in the Fayoum governorate. [Ahr & MY]
6. May 03 – A bomb went off near the holiday home of the provincial governor near Qarun, in the Fayoum governorate. Nobody was hurt in the incident. The HIT claimed responsibility for the attack. [MY]
7. May 03 – Gunmen abducted a Coptic child as he was walking to school in the town of Nag Hammadi, in the Qena governorate. The hostage was released two weeks later. [EI]
8. May 04 – A small bomb went off at a traffic junction in the city of Fayoum. No casualties were reported in the explosion. [MY]
9. May 04 – Militants fired a barrage of mortar rounds at a police station in the town of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. No casualties were reported in the incident. [AP & EI]
10. May 06 – Gunmen opened fire at police forces as they tried to arrest members of the Muslim Brotherhood in Basarta, in the Dumyat governorate, killing one officer and injuring a colleague. Five civilians were also hurt in the incident. [Ahr & AM]
11. May 07 – An electricity pylon was bombed and destroyed by unknown militants near Kom Ashim, in the Fayoum governorate. [MY]
12. May 07 – Two policemen were shot to death by a group of gunmen as they were guarding a police facility in the village of Matala, in the North Sinai governorate. [AFP, Ahr, AM, EI & Reut]
13. May 08 – Terrorists opened fire at policemen in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, killing two officers and injuring one colleague. [Ahr, AP, DNE & EI]
14. May 08 – Militants fired three mortar rounds at a security checkpoint south of Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. One soldier was hurt in the incident. [AM]
15. May 08 – Gunmen shot and critically injured a police officer outside his home in the Beni Suef governorate. A bystander was also hurt in the shooting. [EI & MY]
16. May 09 – Two policemen, a security guard and three civilians were wounded when gunmen attacked two security checkpoints in the villages of Ghaba and Hamadin, in the Sharqiya governorate. [EI]
17. May 09 – Gunmen opened fire at policemen as they were arresting fugitive members of the Muslim Brotherhood in the village of Basarta, in the Dumyat governorate, killing a security guard. Three of the assailants were killed in the ensuing gun battle. [Ahr, AM, DNE & EI]
18. May 09 – Two police officers were shot to death in two separate attacks by gunmen in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. One of the victims was shot as he was guarding a school, while the other was killed as he was walking on a street. [AM & EI]
19. May 10 – A woman was shot and wounded by unknown militants at an undisclosed location in the North Sinai governorate. [AM]
20. May 10 – Three bombs exploded outside the residence of a prominent judge in Helwan, in the Qahira governorate, injuring a bystander. The judge’s vehicles were damaged in the blasts. [Ahr, DNE & EI]
21. May 10 – A group of gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint in Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate, injuring one soldier. [EI]
22. May 10 – Three members of a family were kidnapped by a group of unidentified gunmen in the North Sinai governorate. No further information was avaialble. [AM]
23. May 11 – Two young girls were killed when bomb exploded outside their home in Wadi al-Natrun, in the Beheira governorate. The device went off as the children fiddled with it. [EI]
24. May 11 – Two bombs exploded successively in the city center of Aswan. No casualties were reported in the blasts. [MY]
25. May 12 – Unidentified gunmen fired at a security checkpoint in the Fayoum governorate. Nobody was hurt in the shooting. [Ahr]
26. May 12 – Sixteen students sustained injuries when militants shot them at a high school in the city of Damanhour, in the Beheira governorate. [Ahr]
27. May 13 – Four civilians were killed when their car was struck in a roadside bomb explosion in the North Sinai governorate. The device had been planted by cadres of the DaIWS. [Ahr, AM & DNE]
28. May 13 – A roadside bomb exploded as an Egyptian army convoy passed by in Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. Four soldiers were killed in the attack. [Ahr, AM, DNE & EI]
29. May 14 – Two electricity poles were bombed and damaged by unidentified attackers south of Kafr el-Dawar, in the Iskandariya governorate. [MY]
30. May 14 – Militants bombed and destroyed an electricity pylon near Qusiya, in the Asiyut governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [MY]
31. May 14 – Three electricity pylons were bombed and slightly damaged by militants near the city of Zagazig, in the Sharqiya governorate. [MY]
32. May 14 – Unknown assailants bombed and destroyed two electricity poles in the town of Nag Hammadi, in the Qena governorate. [MY]
33. May 14 – An off-duty policeman and a friend were shot to death by militants as they were riding a motorcycle in the Warraq suburb of Giza. [EI]
34. May 14 – A small bomb exploded in the vicinity of a police station in the city of Fayoum. No one was hurt in the incident. [MY]

42. May 16 – A bomb exploded outside a courthouse in the city of Asiyut. A police officer was seriously wounded in the blast. [Ahr & AP]

44. May 17 – Unknown gunmen opened fire at a police patrol on a highway in the Fayoum governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [Ahr, DNE & MY]
45. May 18 – A group of gunmen fired at an army unit on a highway in the Ismailiya governorate. One soldier was injured in the attack. [EI]
46. May 18 – A bomb went off on the side of a busy highway on the outskirts of Fayoum. Nobody was hurt in the blast. [MY]
47. May 18 – A police officer was wounded when a bomb he was trying to defuse went off outside a police club in the city of Zagazig, in the Sharqiya governorate. [EI]

49. May 18 – A policeman was shot and injured by gunmen as he was traveling home from work on the outskirts of Fayoum. [MY]

55. May 19 – Motorcycle-borne attackers bombed and damaged an electricity transformer in the town of Abu Hammad, in the Sharqiya governorate. [MY]
56. May 19 – A civilian was killed and another one was wounded when terrorists shot them on separate occasions in the town of Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr, AM & EI]
57. May 19 – Militants opened fire at policemen as they tried to inspect their vehicle on a road near Wasta, in the Beni Suef governorate. One of the officers was seriously injured in the attack. [EI]
58. May 20 – Attackers hurled a firebomb at a sewage drainage station in the town of Bilbais, in the Sharqiya governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [MY]
59. May 20 – A policeman was injured when militants opened fire at security forces raided a hideout in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. One of the terrorists was eliminated in the operation. [EI]
60. May 21 – Gunmen shot and killed a police officer as he was riding his motorcycle near the village of Beba, in the Beni Suef governorate. [EI & MY]
61. May 21 – A policeman was killed and a colleague was critically injured when attackers shot them in the village of Zaweya, in the Fayoum governorate. The wounded officer succumbed to his injuries later that day. [EI & MY]
62. May 21 – Two soldiers were wounded when an army vehicle was struck in a roadside bomb blast in Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. [EI]
63. May 21 – Attackers opened fire at policemen in the town of Abu Hammad, in the Sharqiya governorate, killing an officer and injuring a colleague. One of the gunmen was eliminated in retaliatory gunfire. [AM, EI & MY]
64. May 22 – A small bomb exploded outside a courthouse in the city center of Asiyut. No casualties were reported in the attack. [Ahr]
65. May 22 – Militants hijacked an ambulance carrying sick soldiers south of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. One of the soldiers, a medical worker and the driver were hurt in the attack. The other soldier was abducted and executed shortly afterwards. [Ahr, AM, DNE, EI & Reut]
66. May 22 – Gunmen opened fire at the police station of Abuksa, in the Fayoum governorate. Two security guards sustained injuries in the attack. [EI]

71. May 23 – A roadside bomb exploded as the car of a lawyer passed through a tunnel in the city of Abu Hammad, in the Sharqiya governorate, killing him. Eight bystanders were wounded in the blast. 74. May 25 – A soldier was killed and a colleague was injured in clashes with militants during operations south of Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate. [AM & EI]
75. May 26 – Militants sprayed gunfire at the house of the mayor and firebombed his parked car in the village of Beni Bakr, in the Kafr el-Sheikh governorate. No one was hurt in the attack. [MY]
76. May 26 – Five buses were set on fire by a group of assailants at the depot of a public transport company in the city of Ismailiya. [MY]
