Militant Incidents in Egypt (May 2014)

1. May 02 – Gunmen fired at policemen as they were dispersing a protest by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Helwan, in the Qahira governorate. Three police officers were wounded in the incident. [Ahr, AM & DNE]
2. May 02 – A suicide bomber blew himself up at a security checkpoint in Tur, in the South Sinai governorate, killing a soldier. Five other soldiers were hurt in that blast. The ABaM claimed responsibility for the attack. [AFP, Ahr, AM, AP, DNE & Reut]
3. May 02 – One passenger was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a passing bus in Ras Gara area of the South Sinai governorate. The driver and three other passengers were hurt in the blast. The attack was claimed by the ABaM. [AFP, Ahr, AM AP, DNE & Reut]
4. May 02 – A bomb exploded at a traffic police booth in the Heliopolis suburb of Qahira, killing an officer and injuring four colleagues. [AFP, Ahr, AM, DNE & AP]
5. May 02 – Gunmen fired at supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood as they staged demonstrations in the Agani and Hanoville suburbs of Iskandariya, killing two protesters and injuring at least three others. [AM & Ahr]
6. May 02 – A car bomb exploded near a subway station in the Ramses neighborhood of Qahira, injuring a civilian. The militant handling the vehicle died in the blast. [Ahr, AM, AP & DNE]
7. May 04 – A retired army officer was shot and killed by unknown terrorists in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr & AM]
8. May 05 – Assailants affiliated to the Muslim Brotherhood threw firebombs at a rally by supporters of presidential election candidate Abdelfattah al-Sisi in the town of Kafr Sa’ad, in the Dumyat governorate. Three people were wounded in the incident. [Ahr]
9. May 06 – Thugs linked to the Muslim Brotherhood hurled firebombs at a rally of supporters of election candidate Abdelfattah al-Sisi in the town of Khanka, in the Qalyubiya governorate. The attack led to a bout of deadly brawls between detractors and supporters of Sisi. [Ahr]
10. May 08 – Two officers were wounded when gunmen opened fired at a police vehicle in the Hawamdiya suburb of Giza. [Ahr]
11. May 09 – Gunmen opened fire at the sentry tower of the MFO peacekeepers’ base in Goura, in the North Sinai governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [AM]
12. May 11 – A policeman was abducted by gunmen in the Sharqiya governorate. The hostage was freed by security forces later that day. The victim suffered injuries during the ordeal. [Ahr & AM]
13. May 11 – Militants opened fire at a military convoy south of Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate, killing a soldier and injuring a colleague. The incident was blamed on the ABaM. [Ahr, AP & DNE]
14. May 12 – Assailants set fire to the local headquarters of the election campaign of Abdelfattah al-Sisi in the town of Minya el-Qam, in the Sharqiya governorate. [Ahr, AM & MENA]
15. May 13 – Terrorists ambushed a policeman as he was driving home from work in his car in the Sharqiya governorate, sparking a shootout between the officer and his attackers. The policeman died in the incident. One of the assailants was also killed in the firefight. [Ahr & DNE]
16. May 14 – Gunmen fired shots at protesters participating in a demonstration march by proponents of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Ain Shams suburb of Qahira. The incident led to deadly riots and brawls between opponents and supporters of the Brotherhood. [Ahr]
17. May 14 – Six policemen sustained injuries when gunmen raked their vehicle with gunfire in the city of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr]
18. May 16 – Thugs linked to the Muslim Brotherhood stopped the car of a policeman in Qahira‘s Helwan suburb, beat up the officer and subsequently burnt his vehicle. [Ahr & DNE]
19. May 17 – A police officer was shot to death by militants as he was riding home from work on his motorcycle in the Sharqiya governorate. [Ahr]
20. May 18 – A motorcycle-borne militant hurled a bomb at a rally of supporters of presidential candidate Abdelfattah al-Sisi in the Ain Shams suburb of Qahira, injuring two policemen and two civilians. [Ahr, AM, DNE & Reut]

22. May 19 – A group of militants blew up a section of a gas pipeline south of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [AFP, Ahr, AP & DNE]
23. May 19 – Two children were wounded when a bomb exploded on a busy street in the Imbaba suburb of Giza. No further information was available. [DNE]
24. May 19 – Gunmen opened fire at a security checkpoint outside a university campus in the city of Qahira, killing three policemen and injuring nine others. [AFP, Ahr, AM, AP, DNE & Reut]
25. May 20 – A bomb exploded outside a university campus in the city of Asiyut shortly after security forces had cleared protests by proponents of the Muslim Brotherhood. No one was hurt in the blast. [Ahr]
26. May 21 – Militants hurled a bomb at a police vehicle in Arish, in the North Sinai governorate, injuring seven officers and two bystanders. A child was killed after he was run over by the car as the driver panicked following the blast. [AFP, Ahr & Reut]
27. May 22 – An officer was killed and two colleagues were wounded when a police patrol was fired upon by terrorists near Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr, AM & AP]
28. May 23 – A bomb exploded as police forces were dispersing a protest by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood outside a mosque in the Nassr City suburb of Qahira. Nobody was hurt in the blast. [Ahr, AM & DNE]
29. May 23 – A segment of a gas pipeline was blown up by a group of militants on the outskirts of Arish, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr, AP & DNE]
30. May 26 – A bomb exploded outside a polling station in the city of Fayoum. No casualties were reported in the attack. [AM]
31. May 26 – An activist of a nationalist political movement was shot to death by unknown assailants in front of his house in Kerdasa, in the Giza governorate. [Ahr & AM]
32. May 26 – A bomb went off outside a polling station in the city of Mahalla el-Khubra, in the Gharbiya governorate. No one was hurt in the incident. [AM]
33. May 27 – A small bomb went off in the Heliopolis suburb of Qahira. One civilian was wounded in the explosion. [Ahr, AM & DNE]
34. May 28 – A soldier was shot dead by militants while guarding the border in Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate. [Ahr, AM & DNE]
