Militant Incidents in Egypt (Jul. – Sep. 2012)

1. Jul. 01 – Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a police officer as he was driving his car at an undisclosed location in the South Sinai governorate. [DNE]
2. Jul. 03 – Two brothers were killed by Islamist thugs in the town of Abu Kabir, in the Sharqiya governorate. No further information was available. [DNE]
3. Jul. 13 – Bedouin gunmen abducted two American tourists and a local guide from their car in the North Sinai governorate. The hostages were released a few days later. [AFP, Ahr, AP & Reut]
4. Jul. 19 – Motorcycle-borne gunmen fired at an Egyptian army foot patrol in the town of Sheikh Zuwaid, in the North Sinai governorate, killing two soldiers. [AFP, Ahr, AP, DNE & Reut]
5. Jul. 21 – Thugs assaulted striking workers on a picket outside a textile company in the city of Mahalla, in the Gharbiya governorate. One of the strikers was killed and four others were wounded in the incident. The assailants were linked to the company’s managers. [Ahr]

8. Jul. 27 – A medical doctor who had assisted wounded protesters during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 was abducted by unknown assailants from his house in Qahira. The man sustained injuries from assaults and injections of unknown chemical substances before being released the next day. [Ahr]
9. Aug. 03 – Two offices of the Islamist FJP party were set ablaze by unknown attackers in the Haram and Mit Okbar suburbs of Giza. [DNE]
10. Aug. 05 – A band of about 35 militants attacked an Egyptian border checkpoint south of Rafah, in the North Sinai governorate, killing sixteen soldiers. Seven other troops were hurt in the incident. Five of the assailants were subsequently eliminated by Israeli troops after they crossed the border with a seized military armored vehicle.
