Ashraf Youssef (°ca 1978) was a little-known Egyptian jihadi. He was implicated in a thwarted terrorist plot in 1999.1 Youssef went into hiding before establishing and leading the small Islamic Glory Brigades in the Land of the Nile [KFIAN; Kataeb al-Fakr al-Islami fi-Ard al-Nil] in the mid-2000s.2 He masterminded the Apr. 07, 2005 suicide bombing at Cairo’s Khan el-Khalil market in which three tourists were killed.3

The Egyptian authorities apprehended Youssef on Apr. 29.4 At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly making preparations for new attacks.5 On May 11, 2005, Youssef was critically injured when he deliberately and repeatedly hit his head against a wall of his prison cell. He succumbed to his injuries eight days later.6
