Salem al-Shenoub was a Bedouin jihadi from the town of Hassana. He was one of the first to join the Assembly of Monotheism and Jihad in the Sinai [JTJS; Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad fi-Sina’a] in 2000.1 Shenoub became the third-most powerful man in the organization.2 He was designated as the military commander of the JTJS and was tasked with giving recruits weapons and explosives training.3

Shenoub was one of the architects of the 2004 attacks in Taba and Nuweiba.4 He was also involved with preparations for the April 2005 bombings in Sharm el-Sheikh.5 As Egyptian security forces clamped down on the JTJS, Shenoub was forced to hide on Mount Hallal. He reinforced the militants’ position by having landmines planted on the mountain.6 Police nevertheless eliminated Shenoub in November 2005.7
