Ahmed Samir was an Egyptian Islamist militant and member of the Mansoura Jihad Cells [MJC] during the second half of the 2010s. He was deeply involved in the group’s preparations to launch attacks. Samir purchased firearms and explosives to make bombs but also helped scout potential targets, including the Suez Canal and a General Motors factory near Giza.1 He furthermore helped manage the MJC’s financial resources.2

As the Egyptian authorities cracked down on the MJC in late 2009, Samir fled the Mansoura area and hid in Cairo’s Nassr City where he was eventually caught by police on Nov. 06 of that year.3 Samir was in prison until the interim military authorities released him in the wake of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.4 Prosecutors reopened the case against the MJC in 2013. Samir was tried in absentia and sentenced to death on Mar. 19, 2014.5
