Mahmoud Zaghara was a jihadi from the Gaza Strip where he was apparently involved in Salafi militancy. Zaghara was eventually captured and detained as the Islamic Resistance Movement [HAMAS; Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya] cracked down on their Salafi opponents.1

Following his release, Zaghara crossed into the Sinai Peninsula and joined the Islamic State’s Province of Sinai [DaIWS; Dawlat al-Islamiya Wilayat Sina’a]. He eventually became one of the organization’s chief training officers.2 Zaghara was killed during clashes with Bedouin tribal militiamen south of Rafah in May 2017.3 His death was later acknowledged on social media channels affiliated to the DaIWS.4
