Mohammed Tawfiq (°1985) is a jihadi from the Egyptian city of Zagazig. His father was an army officer and he spent much of his childhood in Saudi Arabia.1 Tawfiq returned to Egypt to study engineering at the University of Zagazig.2 He was greatly affected by the death of his father and turned to religion for comfort.3 By 2007, Tawfiq attended the mosque of Salafi preacher Madin Hassaneen.4 Before long, he become part of a circle of Hassaneen followers that included Ahmed Rahman and Sayed Morsi.5 At one point, Tawfiq and several associates were arrested by the Egyptian police.6 Upon their release following the 2011 revolution, they had become even more devoted to Islam.

In mid-2013, Tawfiq joined his long-time associates who had formed the Partisans of Shari’a in the Land of Egypt [ASAK; Ansar al-Shari’a fi-Ard al-Kinana].7 In early 2014, he took part in several attacks against policemen in the Sharqiya governorate.8 After the Egyptian authorities began clamping down on the ASAK in March 2014, Tawfiq fled to Cairo where he became a member of the Reinforcements of Egypt [AM; Ajnad Misr] upon invitation of it leaders Hammam Attiya.9

Security forces apprehended Tawfiq in Giza’s Imbaba suburb on May 08, 2014.10 He was subsequently brought to trial in two separate cases. In October 2016, Tawfiq was given a two-year prison sentence for having insulted the judiciary.11 On Dec. 07, 2017, a court sentenced him to death for his activities in the AM.12 Judges sentenced him to life imprisonment for his role in the ASAK on Oct. 14, 2018.13
