Mahmoud Attiya (°ca 1980) is a little-known militant from Helwan. A longtime member of the Muslim Brotherhood, he participated in sit-in protests by the movement’s supporters in the Egyptian capital after the army deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in the summer of 2013.1 Attiya eventually became involved in the Helwan Brigades [KH; Kataeb Helwan]. He provided the outfit with funding and weapons.2 Attiya is thought to have personally planned the Aug. 14, 2014, killing of a policeman outside his home in Helwan.3 He managed to avoid capture as the Egyptian authorities cracked down on the KH and arrested more than 100 of its members since late 2014. His current status and whereabouts are unknown.
