Hani Shaheen is a little-known jihadi operative from Egypt who joined the Brigade of the Criterion [KaF; Kataeb al-Furqan] after the 2013 army coup.1 He served as a senior member of the outfit, although his precise role remains unclear.

Following the KaF’s merger into the Partisans of the Holy House [ABaM; Ansar Bait al-Maqdis], Shaheen traveled to Syria where he linked up with the Victory Front for the People of the Levant [JaNS; Jabhat al-Nusra li-Ahli ash-Sham] in late 2013.2 Shaheen later returned to Egypt on the orders of a certain “Abu Omar al-Masri”.3 Back in the country, he reportedly linked up with radicalized former supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Gharbiya governorate. Shaheen instructed some of these elements in bomb-making.4 He and his associates carried out a series of bomb attacks in Kafr el-Zayat, Mahalla and Tanta.5 Several policemen and civilians were hurt in the blasts. The Egyptian authorities arrested him in mid-November 2014.6
