Abu Hamza al-Maqdisi was a mysterious jihadi from the Gaza Strip who served as an important field commander for the Islamic State’s Province of Sinai [DaIWS; Dawlat al-Islamiya Wilayat Sina’a].1 In that capacity, he reportedly oversaw many operations against Egyptian security forces on the peninsula.2 Maqdisi also played a key role in helping train the DaIWS’ cadres.3 He was eliminated in an air strike on his vehicle in Sheikh Zuweid on Oct. 01, 2018.4 Maqdisi’s true identity was never revealed.
