Hani Amer (ºca 1983) was an Egyptian electronics and software engineer who became devoted to Islamism when he joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 2005.1 Following the January 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Amer supported Islamist politician Hazem Abu Ismail and got involved in his aborted presidential campaign.2 During this time, he met Arish-based university professor Mohammed Nasser.3

Amer, Nasser and several associates traveled to the Gaza Strip in April 2012 and received training by operatives of the Islamic Resistance Movement [HAMAS; Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya].4 During his stay in Gaza, Amer also assisted HAMAS cadres working on the organization’s missile development program.5 After the July 2013 army coup against Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, he participated in the massive sit-in protests at the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in Cairo’s Nassr City suburb.6

Amer became one of the founding members of the Brigades of the Criterion [KaF; Kataeb al-Furqan] in the summer of 2013.7 He acted as the group’s second-in-command and headed its cell in Ismailiya.8 Amer also procured weapons through Sudanese smugglers and associates within the Partisans of the Holy House [ABaM; Ansar Bait al-Maqdis].9 He personally participated in some of the outfit’s high-profile attacks, including the August 2013 rocket strike on a ship sailing through the Suez Canal and the Oct. 07, 2013 attack on a satellite communications facility in Cairo.10

Amer joined the ABaM following its merger with the KaF in late 2013. He helped carry out the group’s bomb attack on the Cairo police headquarters on Jan. 26, 2014.11

Amer was arrested by police in Sadis min-Oktubar, in the Giza governorate. At the time of his arrest, he was purportedly preparing to travel to Syria. Amer was later sentenced to death by an Egyptian court in. He was hanged on May 17, 2015.12
