Karim al-Bedawi was a Libyan Islamist militant and long-time resident of Egypt. In the early 2000s, he joined the Soldiers of God [GA; Jund Allah]; a small jihadi outfit that was planning to attack the American and Israeli embassies in Cairo.1 Bedawi was arrested as the authorities rolled up the outfit in January 2003 and was kept in prison for several years.2

Bedawi was released by the interim military authorities following the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.3 He immediately linked up with long-time associate Tarek Abu Azzam and became a member of the al-Qa’ida-affiliated Mohammed Jamal Network [MJN].4 Bedawi became a deputy of its leader Mohammed el-Kashif and helped him with smuggling weapons from Libya to the Gaza-based Armies of Monotheism and Jihad in Palestine [JTJF; Jahafil al-Tawhid wal-Jihad fi-Filastin] and Popular Resistance Committees [PRC; Lijan al-Muqawama al-Shabiya].5

At the same time, Bedawi was also involved in the Nassr City Cell [NCC].6 The module was believed to plan strikes against American warships traveling through the Suez Canal.7 His precise role in the module was never revealed. Bedawi was present at meetings where plans for attacks were discussed and recruited several NCC members.8 On Oct. 24, 2012, he blew himself up during a shootout with security forces who raided an apartment used by the cell in Cairo’s Nassr City suburb.9
