Abdul-Zaher Hassan was a fuel station storekeeper from Giza who became involved in militancy after the army deposed Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in the summer of 2013.1 He served as a key leader of the Monitoring and Deterrence Cell [KRR; Khalia al-Rusud wal-Rada] which was made up of radicalized Muslim Brotherhood supporters.2 Hassan was apprehended as the Egyptian security forces cracked down on the outfit in early 2014.3 A Cairo court sentenced him to life imprisonment in May 2016.4
