Ahmed Galal was an Egyptian Islamist and former activist for the Salafi Islamist Nour party.1 In the fall of 2013, he joined his friend Hammam Attiya’s newly formed Reinforcements of Egypt [AM; Ajnad Misr] and quickly became one of the group’s most influential members. At first, Galal took charge of the outfit’s public relations.2 After a while, he also helped to make bombs.3

Following the death of Attiya, the AM designated Galal as its new leader. On Apr. 09, 2015, the group issued a statement in which his new role was officially announced.4 Galal tried to reorganize the AM in the face of the government’s ferocious crackdown.5 He sought to procure weapons from Libya.6 The AM only carried out two operations under his command, including the Aug. 10, 2015 attack on a traffic police checkpoint in Heliopolis. One police officer was killed and another one was wounded in that incident.7

On Jan. 20, 2016, police forces eliminated Galal during a raid on his hideout.8 His two close associates, including possible successor Mohammed Gad, were eliminated in a subsequent raid on a house in Cairo’s Ma’adi neighborhood on Feb. 03, 2016.9
