Ahmed Gabr (°1979) was an Egyptian who got involved with Islamist activities while studying at the Banha University in the mid-2000s.1 He allegedly preached austere Salafism and served as the leader of a group of Cairo-based Islamist radicals known as the Victorious Sect [TaM; Ta’ifa al-Mansoura].2 Gabr was furthermore reported to have been in contact with foreign jihadi elements.3

Police arrested Gabr on Feb. 16, 2006 during a weeks-long crackdown on the TaM.4 The Egyptian authorities were initially convinced that they had thwarted a series of imminent attacks and subjected Gabr and his associates to torture to get more information on the TaM.5 Investigators failed to come up with evidence. Gabr was not charged with terrorist activity and is believed to have been released. His current status and whereabouts are unknown.
