Mahmoud Abu Zeid (°ca 1993) is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who turned to violence following the deposal of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in the July 2013 army coup. He took part in protests and riots following the security forces’ crackdown on demonstrators.1 Around the same time, Abu Zeid got acquainted with Khalid Askar and later joined the Askar and Azab Network [AAN].2

Abu Zeid became a key member of the Askar’s AAN cell and helped procure weapons.3 He assisted with preparations for the Feb. 28, 2014 assassination of a police officer in Mansoura and was furthermore involved in planning future operations.4 Abu Zeid was arrested as the authorities rolled up Askar’s AAN cell on Mar. 07.5 A court in Mansoura sentenced him to death on Jul. 09, 2015.6
