Ahmed Bassiouni (°1979) was an Egyptian man from Cairo’s Zawya el-Hamra suburb who allegedly served as the second-in-command of a group of radical Islamists known as the Victorious Sect [TaM; Ta’ifa al-Mansoura].1 The assistant preacher was said to have been in contact with foreign jihadis.2 He was arrested on Feb. 24, 2006 as the Egyptian authorities cracked down on the TaM.3 The authorities believed that the group was planning imminent attacks across Cairo.4 Bassiouni and his associates were eventually released due to lack of evidence.
