Militancy in Brussels
Brussels has suffered from a disproportionate number of terrorist attacks and acts of political violence in recent years. Militants have furthermore inflicted a far greater number of casualties in the Belgian capital city than in the rest of the country. These particularities do not appear to be related to Brussels’ extraordinary concentration of political power and international representation. Militants have only rarely hit or attempted to attack targets associated with these characteristics. Instead, Brussels seems to owe its plight to a relatively large presence of violent extremists and a permissible environment.
