Xavier Vrancken is a former Belgian soldier who became affiliated with the Continental Unit [UC; Unité Continentale], a group of mostly French and Serbian combatants who fought alongside Russian militant forces in eastern Ukraine since the mid-2010s.1 He traveled to the Donbas region in the summer of 2018 and linked up with UC fighters imbedded with the Abkhaz-dominated Fifteenth International Brigade [IBP; Internatzionliaya Brigada Pyatnashka].2 Vrancken wanted to actively combat the Ukrainian army and quickly came to dislike the guarding and surveillance duties he was assigned to.3 Vrancken left eastern Ukraine later that year.
