Karmoun was seen as Soughir’s deputy and acted as the network’s ideologue.1 He was also involved in the BSN’s fundraising operations.2 Karmoun furthermore acted as a liaison between Soughir’s network and a French logistical support group led by Ahmed Bentaïeb.3

Karmoun was deeply involved in the follow-up of the BSN’s recruits in Iraq. He traveled to Syria in July 2004 to meet operatives present in the country.4 Karmoun also maintained contact with the Belgian woman who carried out the Nov. 09, 2005 suicide car bomb attack on an American army convoy in Ba’quba.5

In January 2008, a Belgian court sentenced him to five years in prison for his role in the BSN.6 An appeals court reduced his punishment to a three-year suspended jail term in June 2008.7 No information is available on his current activities and whereabouts.
